More

Founded by renowned oboist Lawrence Cherney in 1982, Soundstreams has presented hundreds of unique and compelling concerts, from intimate chamber music events to multi-choral spectaculars, operas, music-theatre works and eight highly successful international festivals. A recognized national leader and a hub of international music collaboration, Soundstreams Canada is one of the largest and most dynamic organizations of its kind anywhere in the world.

Each Soundstreams season is comprised of 7 or more music events presented primarily in Toronto. The programming, curated by Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney, focuses on music by living composers, often with a special emphasis on Canadian composers and their international contemporaries. We regularly commission new works from both Canadian and international composers for world premiere, adding an average of 2 works to the global repertoire every year since 1982.

Concerts are often recorded for broadcast by Soundstreams, and the European Broadcasting Union, preserving the musical legacy Soundstreams upholds.

Projects are accompanied by community outreach initiatives aimed to inspire youth both locally and nationally in creating the future of music. For many projects, Soundstreams brings visiting composers and musicians to GTA area schools for mentorship and composition workshops. The mentored student musicians and composers then perform in our Young Artist Overture, a main-stage show presented one hour prior to most Soundstreams concerts.

Lawrence Cherney is a member of the order of Canada, a three time Juno nominee and a recipient of two Lieutenant Governor’s Awards and the Chalmers National Music Award. A recognized national leader, he remains on the cutting edge of music and innovation. This fall Lawrence Cherney will begin travels to Sweden, Latin America and Asia in search of future creative cultural exchanges.

"The day will come when new music will just be music, when its composers will be able to craft their work with the same confidence as composers of old, with emotion and technique equally combined, melding in works of art that will speak to audiences directly and powerfully, without any qualification. That the day might be approaching soon was the optimistic conclusion that Soundstreams Canada left us in a concert devoted to the works of two composers still in their 30's..."

This program features 8 stunning vocal soloists, members of France's Les Jeunes Solistes, led by founder Rachid Safir. Experience the triumphs and disappointments of love and passion in works by Claude Debussy, Claude Vivier, Maurice Ravel, Régis Campo and Claudio Monteverdi. Featuring Vivier's Love Songs, a contemporary masterpiece for vocal ensemble, inspired by Stockhausen's legendary Stimmung. Vivier is a choreographer of emotion - aesthetic, religious, child-like - coloured with tales and nursery rhymes, laughter, shouts, mockery, and tears.
