Ryan Scott is a distinguished and active percussionist who has performed new music as a soloist and with various ensembles throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Japan, Indonesia and Africa. Based in Toronto, he performs with Soundstreams Canada, Continuum, New Music Concerts, the Bob Becker Ensemble, the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, Tapestry New Opera Works, and has been featured several times as a guest artist with NEXUS. He is a percussionist in the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and the Esprit Orchestra and has performed with the National Ballet of Canada and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared several times as soloist with the Esprit Orchestra (most recently premiering Erik Ross’s Concerto for Marimba), Soundstreams, Amici Strings and has given recitals for CBC radio, the Music Gallery (featuring the music of Franco Donatoni and Giacinto Scelsi) and at the International Harp Congress with Arpatambora, a duo with his wife, harpist Sanya Eng.

Ryan has worked with Thomas Ades, Pierre Boulez, George Crumb, Mauricio Kagel, Aaron Jay Kernis, Steve Reich, Murray Schafer, Joseph Schwanter and Gilles Tremblay in presentation of their solo and chamber works.

Ryan has recorded for NAXOS, hatART, Artifact, CBC and CMC records, including performances of Michael Colgrass’s Variations for Four Drums and Viola with Rivka Golani and Toru Takemitsu’s Rain Tree with Bob Becker and Russell Hartenberger. As composer, he premiered his Fantasia for Marimba for CBC Radio’s Two New Hours and composed the opening piece Dogtrot for the ROM Crystal commissioned by Continuum and is currently writing pieces for marimba solo and percussion ensemble.

Ryan studied with Russell Hartenberger and Robin Engelman at the University of Toronto where he attained a Bachelors degree and completed his Masters degree in 1997. He performs on Marimba One marimbas and Zildjian Cymbals.

This season, Ryan will perform Igor Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat with the

National Arts Centre Orchestra and Maki Ishii’s blistering percussion concerto

South-Fire-Summer with the Esprit Orchestra. He is also commissioning a new

work for percussion and electronics from Andrew Staniland and a new work from

Erik Ross for percussion and saxophone with Wallace Halladay.
